Participant Stipend

There is no cost to participate in the SURF program. Participants receive a $5000 stipend for the 10-week fellowship, and housing expenses are included in the program. Funds are also available for travel to and from San Diego.

Schedule

SURF fellows will typically spend 6-8 hours a day, Monday - Friday, engaged in their faculty led research projects. Fellows will attend a weekly research seminar, Perspectives on Ocean Sciences, conducted by Scripps researchers and faculty. In addition to research training, the SURF program provides mentoring and tips to prepare participants for success in graduate school. In addition to their faculty research mentor, SURF fellows are also assigned a graduate student advocate/mentor. Fellows participate in weekly student development workshop, a GRE (Graduate Records Exam) course 2 mornings a week (during weeks 2-6), and give a formal presentation of their results at the Summer Research Symposium at the end of the program.

Student development workshops: Workshop topics will include:

Ethics in Science and Research

How to Write a Personal Statement

How to impress a graduate admissions committee

How to Write a Scientific Paper
How to Impress a Graduate Admissions Committee
Dinner and Dialogue with Graduate Students
Effective Scientific Presentation Skills
Keys to Success in Graduate School

GRE classes: GRE classes meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 - 10:30 am for 5 weeks. Students who have already taken a GRE preparation course or who have already taken the GRE with satisfactory results should request to opt out of these classes.

Housing

Housing is provided for all fellowship recipients ion the main campus of UC San Diego. The apartments are furnished and equipped with a kitchen, outdoor patio, dining room, living room and double of single bedrooms. It is highly recommended that Summer Fellows live in the provided UC San Diego housing in order to more fully appreciate their Summer Fellowship experience. While on campus, students can also take advantage of UC San Diego facilities, such as dining halls, libraries, swimming pools and other recreational amenities.  Note:  Depending on the graduation schedule and flexible start dates, students may be placed in temporary off-campus housing (closefor 1-2 weeks until summer housing options on main campus are made available by housing services at UCSD.

Meals

SURF fellows are expected to cover their own food and meals as part of their stipends during the program. All apartments are equipped with kitchens, and there are multiple dining halls and restaurants that are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner on the main UC San Diego campus. There are several breakfast/lunch and coffee facilities located at Scripps, and small markets on campus where students can shop for staples. Full-service grocery stores are located in a large shopping center less than 0.5 miles away from the on-campus housing.

Transportation

SURF fellows will work in research labs and facilities at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, which is located about 1 mile from the UC San Diego main campus. Courtesy shuttles between main campus and Scripps run every 15 minutes from 7:15 am to 9:15 pm on weekdays. Students can also easily walk or bike between the main campus and Scripps. Beautiful La Jolla beaches, full-service grocery stores, restaurants, and movie theatres are located within an easy walk or a bus ride from the main UC San Diego campus. Students will find it convenient, but not necessary, to have access to a car to enjoy the San Diego region in the evenings and on the weekends.

La Jolla and San Diego

La Jolla is a beautiful seaside community along 7 miles of curving coastline in Southern California. Surrounded on three sides by ocean bluffs and beaches, La Jolla is located within the northern city limits of San Diego, and is 12 miles north of downtown San Diego. With a mild climate (an average daily temperature of 70oC) and access to public beaches, parks and the ocean, La Jolla and the greater San Diego region provide myriad opportunities for outdoor recreation, cultural pursuits, dining, and shopping.
